Dixon, BS, JD, RN, CPHRM, President, Healthcare Risk Education and Consulting, LLC will be discussing how EMTALA is a frequently citied deficiency for hospitals of any size. This program will cover the EMTALA chapter in the State Operations manual, including the responsibilities of a physician on-call, the various documentation requirements staff and the hospital must maintain regarding patient care are admission, and transfer requirements. Part 1 will address the history of EMTALA, including important cases that led to the EMTALA legislation, the role of OIG and OCR and basic requirement of a hospital who accepts Medicare and Medicaid payments. Part 2 addresses on-call physician responsibilities, patient care requirements, such as stabilization, and patient transfers.
